Description
It is the year 1939, and lawyer Albert Mráz finds an article in the pro-regime Gardista where the main character is himself. The anonymous author writes about a converted Jewish lawyer who changed his name to Mráz in order to continue profiting at the expense of Slovaks. Mráz immediately realizes that this will likely be just the beginning of the hunt for his family. A fight for survival begins, the same as tens of thousands of families with similar fates faced during the existence of the wartime Slovak state. Denisa Fulmeková's book maps the genesis of cruelty and the struggle for power, the desire of ordinary people to get rich and own someone else's property, the protectionism of the Slovak wartime regime, and the hatred among the usurpers of power themselves. Although the setting of the story and the fates are fictional, Fulmeková was inspired by real events captured in hundreds of pages of archival documents that she studied. The engagingly narrated story by the author of the successful book 'Konvália' confirms that when losses are counted after the unleashing of hatred and violence, the war of the victors has none.
