No period in Krauz's short detective career was as difficult as the year 1992. Security analysts claimed it was caused by the reckless post-revolution total amnesty, which emptied the prisons and saturated the streets with violence. Krauz and his colleagues from the homicide department were not concerned with security analyses at that time; what mattered to them was that they had work to do, so they did it. In March, they caught Ondrej - the Beast, and proving his guilt and gathering evidence against the most prolific serial killer in the history of Slovak criminalistics took months. It's no wonder that against the backdrop of harsh social changes, the last federal crime that the homicide department in Our City could legally investigate was committed quite inconspicuously - after that, Slovak and Czech police played in their own sandboxes. It occurred so subtly that it almost gathered dust, yet although it was neither particularly beastly nor overly complicated, it would still be a shame not to mention it, because it was beautiful - if something like that can be said about the burning of a young woman and her child.
