The Great Book of Animals is a richly illustrated work that presents a comprehensive picture of the fauna of Central Europe. The introduction provides basic information about animals, zoology as a scientific discipline and its most important fields, the evolution of animals in geological times, the origin, development, and composition of contemporary fauna, as well as the classification of the animal kingdom. Interesting sections also deal with the composition of major animal communities in the conditions of Central Europe, the relationship between humans and animals, biological struggles in nature, animal protection, and the dangers animals pose to human health. The core of the entire work consists of 138 color plates, systematically depicting more than 1500 species of animals. The author of the beautiful illustrations of animals is academic painter Jindřich Krejča. This outstanding, now deceased artist managed to depict even commonly overlooked details of animal bodies with incredible precision, harmoniously blending the world of reality with visual art.
