Description
This Czech-language historical novel tells the story of Allina Strauss, a young woman who, after losing everyone she loves on one fateful night, is forced to work as a nurse in Hochland Home, a state-run factory for children. There, she witnesses and becomes involved in the horrors of Heinrich Himmler’s ruthless eugenics programme, known as Lebensborn. Women of “pure” blood remain in these homes for one purpose: to preserve the Aryan population by giving birth to thousands of children who are adopted by “good” Nazi families. Allina must conceal her Jewish identity while confronting the inhuman practices of a programme that turns children into mere tools of ideology. She also finds an ally in Karl, an SS officer with secrets of his own, and together they risk everything to save innocent lives. It is a story of courage, maternal love and the indomitable strength of the human spirit.
