Description
The Auerspergs are one of the overlooked noble families in the Czech lands, although for centuries they belonged to the foremost families of the Habsburg monarchy, with a history stretching back almost a thousand years. This book by five authors presents the family’s story in detail, from its mythical beginnings around the year 1000, through its celebrated involvement in the sixteenth-century wars against the Turks and its subsequent career as imperial officials, to the Auerspergs’ important political and economic role in the lands of the Bohemian Crown during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Particular attention is paid to the two principal Czech branches: the Vlašim line, associated with the monarchy’s highest politics, and the Žleby line, focused mainly on business and the administration of large estates. The book also follows the changing fortunes of their residences, from present-day Slovenia through Austria to Bohemia, including their main seats at Vlašim, Žleby and Slatiňany. The contents are in Czech.
