Description
In 1327, life in the English town of Kingsbridge is closely bound to the activities of its two monasteries, one for monks and one for nuns, which jointly care for the famous cathedral. While the nuns running the local hospital receive generous gifts from grateful patients, the monks survive in poverty and stifling ignorance, consumed by envy and a desire to seize their “rivals’” property. The prosperity of ordinary residents depends entirely on the successes or failures of the wool merchants’ guild. Some of them, including the children of the local thief Gwenda and Philemon, the guildmaster’s daughter Caris, the builder Merthin and his brother Ralph, take their fate into their own hands and try to defy its twists, whether driven by good and beneficial intentions or by selfishness and greed. Their lives gradually, profoundly and irrevocably become entangled with the greatest disaster ever to befall humanity: the plague known as la moria grande, the great death.
