This book is not only the dramatic story of Jiří George Kozel’s life, one of the founding fathers of Czech big beat, but also a reflection of the years remembered as the golden sixties. Like many young people who came of age after the war, Kozel was fascinated by the British rock scene that emerged after censorship was abolished and the social atmosphere relaxed. Rising prosperity gave young people more free time and money, while the mass spread of record players, radios and televisions, concert shows and music magazines helped create the culture of celebrity and pop culture on both sides of the Iron Curtain. Rock became a form of expression and self-definition, while sexuality and experiments with drugs demonstrated the existence of a generation rejecting the past, authority and war. Hundreds of big-beat bands emerged, including Blue Effect, founded by Kozel. The second part follows his career during twenty years of exile, when he played with international musicians and in his bands Crown and Free Formation, through to his triumphant return to Czech rock stages.
