Description
Children can be innocent or sly, charming or malicious, mirrors of the adult world or its unexpected disruptors. This short-story collection offers a varied cross-section of perspectives on childhood from twelve leading Czech authors. Each story takes a different approach, ranging from humorous and suspenseful tales through fairy-tale horror to chilling family dramas in which lives may be at stake. The children are not merely objects of upbringing or victims of circumstance, but active forces in the plot, sometimes amusingly and sometimes disturbingly. They appear as brave personalities who take on the role of parents when adults fail, as emotional blackmailers and little devils capable of bringing down a household, or as beings whose decisions can save us, comfort us, drive us mad or even send us to the grave. The stories explore relationships between parents, grandparents and children, as well as between children themselves, and the loving or intensely conflicted forms those relationships can take. The contents are in Czech.
