“There will be a murder tonight…” Who could resist such an enticing invitation? Of course, it is only part of a parlour game, and Phyllida Bright, Agatha Christie’s housekeeper, looks forward to using her powers of deduction during a visit to her new hosts, Mr and Mrs Wokesley. Family friends have been invited to play the suspects, and Mr Wokesley performs his role as the corpse brilliantly. Unfortunately, when the solution is due to be revealed, it becomes clear that Mr Wokesley is actually dead. In the absence of Inspector Cork, Phyllida takes charge of the investigation. At first, there seems to be no reason anyone would want to kill Mr Wokesley, but Phyllida begins connecting the suspects with their roles and assigned motives in the game. It soon becomes clear that every one of them had a reason to murder their host, both in the game and in reality. Phyllida finds herself in the middle of a devilishly tangled mystery, where the murderer refuses to play by the rules.
