Description
This Czech-language fantasy novel follows Fern, a ratkin who has grown tired of the dull and sometimes difficult life of running a bookshop in the remote town of Šerák. She moves to Thune to open a shop beside the café owned by an old friend. Renovating an old house and turning it into a charming bookshop should surely cure her gloomy mood, but a new façade and a few brushstrokes cannot solve the problem of a missing sense of purpose. One evening, Fern tries to drown her feeling of futility in alcohol. She fails, and the next morning wakes far from home beside a legendary elf warrior, a goblin captive with a liking for silver cutlery and her own hangover. After they drive off a band of villains seeking the goblin, who has a rich bounty on her head, Fern finds herself in a time and place where bookshop worries no longer weigh her down. Living fully in the present, she finally begins to discover who she really is.
