Description
The author has literarily processed stories she experienced as a curator for Roma in the 1970s. The individual stories are connected by the character Pepina, who becomes a curator in Prague 4. Her office is in Nusle, near Bratří Synků Square, where the Olah Roma, who lived in Nusle at that time, gather in a messy little park. Pepina's clients and the heroines of many stories were both Olah and Slovak Romani women, such as the elderly Petronila-Phuri, the beautiful Verona with many children, or Božena Červeňáková from Slovakia, who is utterly helpless in Prague and just wants to see her grandson. Through her work, Pepina meets various people, including great Romani musicians and a talented painter, and gradually begins to understand the Romani mentality. The entertaining yet sad stories take us into an environment that most of us do not know, but which is certainly interesting and enriching.
