Description
Chief Inspector Gamache is asked to ensure security at a guest professor's lecture. Although he hesitates as to why the head of the homicide department should be tasked with this, it sounds quite simple. However, that is only until Gamache discovers the repulsive agenda of Professor Robinson. He then requests the university administration to cancel the event. They refuse, citing academic freedom, and accuse Gamache of censorship and intellectual cowardice. Soon, however, the professor's views begin to infiltrate conversations. They spread and infect. Truth and reality and deception become so confused that they are almost indistinguishable. Discussions turn into debates, debates into arguments, and arguments into fights. Yet Abigail Robinson promises people that if they follow her, 'Everything will be alright.' But not for everyone. When a murder is committed, it falls to Armand Gamache, his deputy Jean Guy Beauvoir, and their team to investigate the crime and this extraordinary popular delusion. And the madness of crowds.
