Description
How are the Middle Ages and modernity connected? The contributors examine selected works of art and architecture in and beyond Prague, Brno, Sofia, Rome and Yerevan, tracing how modern society reshaped and reinterpreted the medieval period and turned it into a mythical world onto which it projected its ideologies, anxieties and traumas. They describe how the Middle Ages, linked to questions of national identity, found expression in modern architecture, which often served to promote totalitarian ideologies. They also consider visual similarities between the medieval period and modernity, showing that the aesthetics of simplified or aniconic forms characteristic of the Middle Ages corresponded to the search by avant-garde movements in the first half of the 20th century for new forms of artistic expression. The book offers an insight into the many connections between the Middle Ages and modernity and asks to what extent the medieval world we imagine today is a product of the modern age.
