Description

This study offers analytical insights into the pre-Christian religions of the northern Indo-Europeans, namely the Celts, Germanic peoples and Balts. Across three thematic chapters, the author presents a critical synthesis of current knowledge about the pantheons, rituals and mythologies that once formed the pillars of these religious cultures, drawing on archaeological, philological and ethnological perspectives. Alongside the possibilities of reconstructing systems abandoned by their followers during late antiquity or the Middle Ages as a result of the adoption of Christianity, the book carefully examines the uncertainties, complications and interpretive challenges surrounding individual structures and elements. Through a balanced combination of logical constructivism and critical deconstruction, it provides credible outlines of archaic traditions that influenced not only Western Christianity, as a substrate heritage, but also the later secularized cultures of Northern Europe.
