Description
Old Germanic languages. A historical and grammatical overview ***** The monograph consists of two main and two supplementary parts. The first part provides the earliest linguistic, epigraphic, and archaeological information about the early users of Germanic languages. The second part summarizes the histories of individual languages from their tribal past recorded by ancient authors and captured in early epigraphic monuments through their literary traditions to the present day. The appendices convey the main models of genealogical classification of Germanic languages among other Indo-European branches as well as of the Germanic languages themselves; comparative phonetics and morphology of the old Germanic languages; several longer texts by ancient and medieval authors; an overview of Old Germanic scripts; lexicostatistical classification of Old Germanic languages and Frisian dialects. The bibliography is divided into two sections: (1) primary sources; (2) (mostly) diachronic studies.
