Description
This publication is the output of a field research project on historical textiles stored in the collections of the Brno diocese. The introductory sections address both the characteristics of the studied material and its placement within the European context, as well as the general history of liturgical garments, their specifics, and their significance both in the past and present. The catalog section of this book presents a selection of patterned luxury fabrics from the 17th and 18th centuries from parish collections of the Brno diocese. The presentation of individual fabric pattern reconstructions, in the context of partial technological descriptions, highlights the transformations of textile decor in relation to production technology. From the 17th century, exceptionally valuable Asian and Italian patterned velvets have been preserved in the collections. The core of the preserved paraments from the 18th century mainly consists of productions from French and Italian workshops, although fabrics from Southeast Asia have also been preserved. The book is primarily intended for art historians, restorers, and designers, for whom it can represent a valuable source of education and inspiration.
