The typical character of the comic servant, known as gracioso, whose form was established in the dramatic works of Lope de Vega, is one of the most studied figures in Spanish Golden Age theater. However, little attention has been paid to the fact that the gracioso also serves as an advisor to his master and other characters from the nobility. His advice is not merely a cheerful comedic embellishment, but often significantly influences the plot, even in tragically toned plays. How is it possible that the servant character gains such narrative importance amidst the strengthening absolutist monarchy?
