Description
This study examines the interplay of polysemy, context, concept, and construction, using the construction schema [V] – [UP] (English) and [V] – [SHANG] (Chinese) for illustration. In addition to this cognitive semantic analysis, the book also addresses two main premises of cognitive linguistics. On one hand, it is the belief that meaning largely depends on archetypal understanding, which reflects the basic cognitive dispositions of humans. At the same time, however, subjectivity is perceived as a key element in the study of lexical semantics, not only in the sense that the role of the conceptualizing subject (i.e., the speaker) is foundational in any use of language, but also regarding the necessity of subjective mental "scanning" in understanding significantly muted lexical meanings.
