Description

On a meadow outside Jičín, on the road to Zebín, people have buried victims of plague epidemics, executed criminals, suicides and heretics since ancient times. One day, the body of the forest master from Velíš is found there, tied to a tree with his stomach cut open and a satanic sign painted in blood on his forehead. The estate owner, Mikuláš Trčka of Lípa, tries to conceal the crime, fearing an investigation by the Utraquist consistory. However, one of his uncles brings a legal complaint against him, so the matter is heard by the royal chamber. Mikuláš’s wife, Johanka of Šelmberk, then asks Jiří Adam of Dobronín to investigate the case. Although it is outside his jurisdiction, he agrees because he once loved her. No sooner does he arrive in Jičín than another murder takes place.
