Description
In the foothill village of Skláře, Czech families settle after the war. Among the newcomers is Jarmila Lukešová, a young woman whose mother died during the war. She must care for her two younger brothers and her father, who gambles away the family savings. Jarmila falls in love with František Smolík, but he does not return her feelings, believing that his beloved Paula will come back from Germany. He also finds himself increasingly opposed to the local Communists. After the events of February 1948, his struggle becomes ever more hopeless. The authorities impose impossible quotas on the Smolíks’ farm, while plans for collectivization begin to circulate. In these difficult times, Jarmila is the only person who steadfastly supports František, and he comes to recognize her courage. Yet no happiness lasts forever, especially with the all-powerful party and its secret police closing in.
