Description
In the summer of 1945, shortly after the war, many Czech families head to the Sudetenland to claim houses left behind by departing Germans. Jiří and Marie Smolík, together with their son František, arrive with all their modest belongings in the foothill village of Glasendorf. There, the cruel and cynical national administrator and Red Guard member Vojtěch Tomeček offers the family a beautiful Sudeten house in his affable, ingratiating manner. The Smolíks are immediately thrilled by the house, which has only one drawback: its original German family still lives there, awaiting deportation. For a time, everyone must learn to share a household. One side are the new masters, forced to tolerate the house’s former inhabitants; the other have lived there all their lives but are now, in effect, strangers. Old grievances and wounds caused by the war gradually emerge in the background. This Czech-language historical novel is set in the unsettled aftermath of the Second World War.
