Description
This Czech-language historical detective novel opens in the Hussite town of Mladá Boleslav, where a severed finger found outside the house of the wealthy merchant Pavel disturbs a peaceful morning. Soon afterwards, the body of a murdered carpenter named Štěpán is discovered in the town pond. With almost no evidence, the reeve accuses Pavel, simply because Štěpán once courted the merchant’s wife, Matylda. She turns to the regional governor Jiří of Poděbrady for help, and he entrusts the investigation to the knight Lukáš of Velyn, a former Hussite fighter. His companion is the knight Norbert of Malkov, a friend of the owner of the Mladá Boleslav estate. The original accusation soon begins to collapse, while the number of mutilated corpses continues to grow. Nothing makes sense, and to uncover the mysterious killer, the investigators must delve deep into the past.
