Description

In 1236, Judge Pardus Tvrdišovec arrives in Hodonín at the head of a punitive expedition to investigate who killed the queen’s reeve Petr and why. Pardus was born in the region and knows the nature of its people, who still believe in the old gods and worship wise women living in the surrounding marshes. Queen Constance has also charged him with ensuring the safety of new settlers who are to make their homes in the town and its surroundings. The situation escalates when an elderly Franciscan monk arrives in Hodonín and joins forces with the local fanatical priest. The novel is inspired by a charter issued by Queen Constance of Hungary, in which she elevates Hodonín to a royal town, grants it extensive rights and calls for the murderers of her reeve to be punished.
