Description

The novel fresco begins with the accession of John of Luxembourg to the Czech throne and ends with the death of his son, the Roman Emperor and Czech King Charles IV. It is one of the most famous periods in our history when Prague was the center of the Roman Empire, but also aspired to become the "second Rome" of Christianity. The complex struggle of both monarchs for power at home and abroad intertwines with the efforts of the northern and southern Bohemian nobility to strengthen the shaken position of the Czech lands and protect the noble privileges. The third layer of the novel's plot is the life of the common people through the eyes of the burgher family Rotlevs. The epic alternates between power intrigues and war scenes with the everyday concerns of the novel's heroes, all depicted in a colorful image of life in the late Middle Ages.
