Description
Lukáš Trobl, a clerk at the regional court from Květnice, accidentally overhears a conversation between two unknown men in a remote tavern called U Bláznivé kobyly, in which the words "it is necessary to kill the emperor" are mentioned. Lukáš is unsure if he imagined it in his drunken state, but he decides to inform his uncle, Court Councillor Maxmilián Trobl. At his uncle's behest, he begins to investigate the pair of strangers and find out if there is indeed a plot to assassinate Rudolf II. He is assisted in his search by the one-eyed war veteran Konrád, the Hungarian courtesan Adriana, and the court astronomer Johannes Kepler. At first, it seems that Lukáš only overheard a drunken joke, but when he is nearly killed himself and is saved only by Captain Albrecht von Wallenstein of the imperial army, he realizes that things are getting serious. Especially when he cannot even trust the imperial chamberlain Filip Lang or the emperor's mistress Kateřina Stradová. Could they also have an interest in Rudolf's death?
