Thirteen-year-old Anna makes a living as an embroiderer in Constantinople and is fascinated by the story of a city in the clouds. On the other side of the walls, a boy named Omeir is preparing for the siege of the city alongside the sultan's army. It is the year 1453. Five hundred years later, eighty-year-old Zénón is trying to rehearse a play based on an ancient story with five schoolboys in the library of Idaž. But among the shelves full of books, a bomb is ticking, planted by a young idealist named Seymour, who has felt trapped his whole life. In the near future, a girl named Konstance, imprisoned in an airtight chamber aboard a spaceship, tries to write down the story of the naive shepherd Aithón, which her father told her. Anna, Omeir, Seymour, Zénón, and Konstance are dreamers and outcasts in the eyes of others, who manage to find hope and ingenuity in the face of the greatest danger. Although it may not seem so at first glance, their lives are perfectly intertwined. The City in the Clouds is a beautiful novel about the importance of caring about something – a book, the Earth, the human heart.
