Perhaps no European dynastic family can boast such uninterrupted continuity and a plethora of significant rulers as the House of Habsburg. At the same time, however, it seems that the Habsburgs have been haunted by a strange misfortune. The first Habsburg on the Czech throne, Rudolf known as Kaše, died under mysterious circumstances during the siege of Horažďovice. His father, the Roman king Albert I, was murdered by his own nephew. However, the worst fate befell the Habsburgs in the 19th century. The fascinating history of the Habsburg dynasty is indeed a showcase of famous and successful rulers, but it also offers surprisingly many very dark stories.
