Description
This historical novel by experienced prose writer Zdeněk Pošíval takes place in the Pelhřimov region in 1671. A herd of noble horses suddenly dies at Bukovská fortress, while their keeper is found with his head blown off. The mysterious event shakes the life of the local squire and his family, launching an investigation into both the cause of the disaster and the culprit. The squire’s son Jožík, the story’s main character and narrator, also joins the search for the truth. Step by step, he uncovers secrets from the past and reveals a mysterious Satan. Why was a bloody sacrifice intended for him, and who carried it out? The author vividly evokes the atmosphere of the period and unfolds a dramatic story of love, sin, greed and violence. Rather than attempting a strictly historical account, the novel creates a timeless parallel, reminding us that the world changes while human nature endures.
