This Czech-language historical account describes the conquest of the Inca Empire, one of the high points of the Spanish conquest of South America. In 1532, an expedition of 168 men landed near the ruined Tumbes, led by the fifty-four-year-old conquistador Francisco Pizarro, who had received permission from the Spanish Crown to continue exploring and conquering the previously unknown regions of the New World. Like many other conquerors, Pizarro sought power and wealth. By coincidence, he entered Peru at a time when the Inca Empire was being torn apart by a fratricidal struggle within its ruling dynasty. In Cajamarca, he first met Atahualpa, who had seized control of the empire. Their confrontation ended in bloodshed and the capture of the Inca ruler. Although Atahualpa offered the Spaniards an extraordinary amount of gold and silver, the conquistadors eventually executed him. Pizarro and his men occupied the capital, Cuzco, completing the subjugation of the most powerful empire in the New World, and Peru became a Spanish colony. The conquerors gained wealth beyond their boldest dreams. How could a few hundred men control an empire of 10 million people, unmatched in the Indies? Was the mighty empire brought to its knees by European heroism, courage, and physical, technological and intellectual superiority? Did the Incas truly abandon all resistance and submit to an “inevitable” fate?
