Description
The creation of this book is based on the discovery of a previously completely unknown and unexplored collection of archival materials from special military investigative commissions from the fortresses of Josefov and Hradec Králové. These commissions addressed issues related to the imprisonment of revolutionaries between 1855 and 1857, particularly their escape attempts, successful escapes, the drafting of texts, especially letters, and active collaboration with the supervising personnel. The materials associated with the investigative commissions, along with the stories and community of prisoners, are part of a broader interpretation of the historical atmosphere of the 1840s to 1860s in the Habsburg Empire. They also relate to the overall transformation of the old world into the new within the process of modernization. In the individual chapters, one can trace how things 'worked' in the fortress prisons, and especially in the microcosm of Josefov in the 1850s, what limits and gaps existed in the imprisonment of revolutionaries at that time. Specific figures and issues in Josefov and Hradec Králové can thus well reflect the atmosphere in contemporary society and its overall fundamental political transformation.
