The battle of the soldiers of the 1st Czechoslovak Independent Battalion under the command of Colonel Ludvik Svoboda near the Ukrainian village of Sokolovo in March 1943 was their first deployment on the Soviet-German front. At the same time, it was also the most difficult battle, as the Czechoslovaks bravely resisted a multiple numerical superiority composed of two combat groups of the German 6th Panzer Division.
