The publication is a collection of basic information about the current situation of more than fifty European ethnic groups without their own state and regional languages. It is in Europe that the model of unity of ethnic-linguistic communities and the 'national' state has been most prominently established. The vast majority of European ethnic groups with more than a million members thus today possess their own state; the same applies to some less numerous ethnic communities. Nations without their own state are often handicapped; the same goes for speakers of regional languages. However, political practice shows that only a small fraction of the thousands of ethnic groups in the world can create their own national state. The mentioned populations also differ significantly (both quantitatively and qualitatively). As for users of regional languages, their ethnic definition is often limited; it is usually replaced by an emphasis on cultural phenomena. Fifty-six presented case studies take a closer look at minority ethnic populations and regional languages from various corners of Europe.
