Description
The third volume of Otakar Husák's memoirs begins with his intentions for the future. After the fighting for Slovakia ended, he got married, wanted to leave the army, and dedicate himself to business. However, President Masaryk had other plans for him! Husák thus continued in service, was promoted to general, and, along with Minister Beneš, participated in negotiating the first allied treaties in Yugoslavia and Romania. The young republic, however, was plagued by political instability, which culminated in the formation of Jan Černý's caretaker government. On the president's recommendation, he was appointed Minister of National Defense. He thus became a builder of the army, for whose overall future he had to fight on all fronts. The narrative includes discussions and debates in parliament, the senate, and in the pages of the contemporary press, while also shedding light on some of the now almost forgotten politicians of that time. Through correspondence and preserved documents, he also revisits the situation and history of the Czechoslovak Legion in Russia in 1919-1920. However, the maximum work commitment and stress left marks on his health.
