The skald Gunhild sets out to save her brother from certain death after he is convicted of a murder he did not commit. She journeys in search of the unknown killer, accompanied by Fajsal, a wise physician from the Arab world who was brought north as a slave. Together they leave the royal court at Lejre and travel through a Danish landscape divided among competing centres of power. Their investigation gradually reveals a complex web of relationships shaped by family loyalty, blood vengeance, political ambition and personal betrayal, while the partnership between Gunhild and Fajsal steadily changes. It also exposes the tension between ancient pagan traditions and the Christianity that is beginning to spread. The characters live in a world where honour, kinship and obligations to one’s family determine a person’s worth, and where a single accusation can mean death. This gripping detective journey also offers a vivid portrait of Viking society during a period of profound change, combining archaeological knowledge with thriller dynamics to explore the struggle for justice, as well as the daily life, travel, faith and power structures of the early medieval north.
