Jake Edwards is a successful businessman and incorrigible womanizer approaching forty who has not thought about the asylum in northern Michigan for nearly thirty years, ever since the terrible night when he escaped from it as a child and never looked back. When Petra, a mysterious woman who claims that they know each other and were best friends in childhood, appears at his company, Jake initially suspects that a former girlfriend is playing a joke on him. Then Petra disappears, leaving behind only a blood-soaked apartment and several mysterious clues leading back to the abandoned institution. With the help of a hypnotist, Jake slowly begins to uncover the dark past he had hoped was buried forever. His fate becomes intertwined with that of Charlie, a recently divorced nurse who has bought Wilder’s Grove, a beautiful Victorian house where Jake spent his childhood, for a suspiciously low price. Her initial enthusiasm fades as strange, inexplicable things begin happening in the house and the neighbours avoid both her and the property. Before long, Jake and Charlie discover that the house holds secrets capable of surprising them both.
