Dalton Greaves is a hero—or so he has been told. He is one of the first human representatives of the Unity, an interspecies confederation seeking to unite all intelligent life in one kind and harmonious brotherhood. So far, however, he has seen only two representatives of the Unity: Boreau, a gigantic slug more interested in plundering than spreading love and harmony, and his human companion Neera. Dalton suspects she invited him aboard Boreau’s ship merely to avoid becoming the next member of a crew eaten by natives while exploring an unknown planet. Surprisingly, the benevolent interspecies confederation devoted to the welfare of all intelligent life really does exist. It calls itself the Collective, dislikes the Unity and has even less patience for its new human lackeys. When Boreau’s exploration ship encounters a Collective cruiser above a newly discovered world, the meeting ends badly for both sides, leaving Dalton caught between three millstones: a terrifying Collective soldier, unfriendly local natives and Neera, who may be the most dangerous of them all.
