Description
This Czech-language science-fiction novel is set in 931 in New Galveston on Mars, where fourteen-year-old Anabelle Crisp crosses the wasteland known as the Weird to find the gang led by Silas Mundt. They have stolen her mother's voice, destroyed her father and left her with nothing but a desire for revenge. Since Anabelle's mother travelled to Earth to care for her sick grandmother, Anabelle spends her days at school and her nights in her father's diner, where her only companion is Watson, the family kitchen robot and dishwasher. When the Silence brings communication and supplies between Earth and the Martian colonies to a halt, life falls into oppressive stillness, until the night Silas Mundt and his gang attack. Ballingrud's novel evokes both the dreamlike vision of America in Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles and the harsh reality of frontier life in Charles Portis's True Grit, vividly portraying Anabelle's journey for revenge through a devastated and angry world. She is accompanied by a household robot, a drunken space pilot and the toughest woman on Mars.
