Description

A harrowing account of the mental states and feelings of a drug addict and homosexual who desperately longs for the fulfillment of his love, it is largely autobiographical. The book was written between 1951 and 1953, but was not published until 1985, and is set in the exotic environment of Mexico City at the time, among various life wrecks. It is a loose continuation of the author's debut novel Junkie.

This time, the main character experiences severe withdrawal symptoms that slowly reveal the hostile outside world in all its horror and leave him defenseless against disturbing visions. He tries to alleviate the painful return from drug isolation by seeking a partner, a love that would also be a conscious connection to the surrounding world.

However, when he fails in this regard as well, he sets off to South America in search of a mysterious plant whose brew is used by local healers.
