A Cold Hand in My Palm was first published in 1975 and is one of Aickman's best collections of short stories. Among its eight stories is the tale 'Pages from a Young Girl's Diary,' which won the World Fantasy Award. Aickman's 'strange stories' (a term he preferred) are brilliantly constructed narratives that subtly depict the oppressive atmosphere, as well as the fears and anxieties of the main characters. The reader encounters a variety of characters, from a man who spends a night in a hospice to a German aristocrat and a woman who sees the image of her own soul. By gradually adding realistic details, Aickman intensifies the tension associated with the impression of a bad dream, in which the main character inevitably heads towards an unhappy ending. Although traditional vampire themes appear in one of the stories, all the tales stand out for their unconventional content, where what evokes fear remains undefined and unspoken, making them even more peculiar and captivating.
