In the middle of the forest stands a house called Lichen Hall, a place shrouded in ancient legends about ghosts, witches, and a child who was not quite a child.
In 1965, Pearl Gorham arrives at Lichen Hall, sent here like many other young women to give birth. Soon, she begins to suspect that the estate's owners are hiding something.
