Description
Thirteen-year-old Niles and Holland are inseparable twins; they are really quite connected, but the reader is more likely to recall Jekyll and Hyde: while Niles is a good boy capable of compassion for his sick mother and actually for others as well, Holland is a mischievous rogue who undermines and ironizes everything. The large family gathers in a rural town in Connecticut in the 1930s for the funeral of their tragically deceased father, and Holland causes trouble for all the aunts, other relatives, and neighbors in every way possible – sometimes, in his presence, some animal or perhaps even a person does not survive, and everything related to him clearly spirals out of control. However, it is not excluded that it might actually be completely different…
The author masterfully builds the atmosphere of a scorching summer in a peaceful countryside, which gradually thickens. And it is also becoming increasingly clear that childhood games and vacations can be infinitely far from innocence.
