Description
Věra Gissing was born in 1929 in Čelákovice near Prague to parents of Jewish descent. In July 1939, she left with her sister Eva on one of the rescue transports organized by British broker Nicholas Winton to Great Britain, where she safely experienced World War II.
Her parents perished in Nazi concentration camps. Nevertheless, Věra – then still Diamantová – returned to liberated Czechoslovakia, where she faced further disappointment that ultimately led to voluntary emigration.
All of this is recounted in her autobiographical book "Perličky dětství," composed not only of personal memories but also of diary entries and letters that Věra wrote primarily to her parents and sister.
It is a profound personal testimony about inhumanity, the cruel consequences of fascism, amorality, and injustice, but also about the strength of a person to stand up against fate. And above all, it is about the hope that allows us to survive even such extreme situations that at first glance seem entirely hopeless.
