Description
Father Goriot works as a laborer in a pasta factory and later becomes a businessman. He is successful and financially well-off. He has two daughters, Anastasia and Delphine, who are already married. One married a banker, the other a nobleman, and they received very substantial dowries from their father. After a while, the dowry is forgotten, and the husbands forbid the daughters from visiting their father. Father Goriot sells his property and moves into a cheap boarding house. His wife, whom he loved very much, died very early, and he devoted all his love to his daughters. The daughters are now spoiled, selfish, and ashamed of their father. Nevertheless, both visit him, not out of love, but for money. The second main character of the novel, student Eugène Rastignac, lives in the same boarding house. Eugène comes to Paris to study law. He comes from a poor family. The money he receives from his parents is only enough for housing. Over time, Eugène realizes that one cannot get by in society without money. He borrows money from his friend Vautrin. At a ball, he meets Delphine and falls in love with her. Because of her, Eugène becomes a gambler; Goriot no longer has much money, and his daughters stop visiting him...
