Description
The story of the courtesan Nana, who has no singing or acting talent, yet gains fame as a theater actress thanks to her beauty. She is surrounded by wealthy lovers whom Nana torments with her whims, draining them of money and dignity. This raw tale, full of naturalistic scenes, is the ninth novel in the Rougon-Macquart series and loosely follows the novel The Killer. Zola vividly depicts the environment of brothels and cabarets, but above all, the society where morality has no place, yet is full of hypocrisy, shamelessness, and coarseness, all covered on the surface by glamour and luxury. In this prose, Zola presents himself as a master of literary naturalism.
