Description
The story of the book takes place in the 1860s, when the "land of fur," i.e., Canada, was home to several competing hunting companies. They sought to push their territories further north, where there was still plenty of rare game. Thus, Lieutenant Hobson is tasked with establishing a new hunting station on the northern coast of America, beyond the Arctic Circle. He embarks on a journey with a handful of soldiers and hunters from Great Slave Lake to Great Bear Lake and from there to the coast – to the seventieth degree of northern latitude. Here, at the tip of a peninsula, he establishes a hunting station. However, he is unaware that he is standing on a glacier covered with a layer of dirt. A volcanic tremor causes the glacier to break away and drift with the crew into the open sea, where it begins to slowly melt. Driven by the ocean current, it passes through the Bering Strait between Russia and Alaska. In the last moment before disaster, the remaining ice with the people lands on one of the Aleutian Islands. The thrilling story is, as is customary with Verne, supplemented by a whole series of geographical and natural curiosities from the polar regions.
