Description
In his 1937 play, Čapek expresses his fear of fascism and predicts the outbreak of war. The main character, compassionate doctor Galén, discovers a cure for a dangerous disease but only treats the poor. He refuses to treat powerful men – politicians and industrialists – until he secures a promise from them to end armament and not declare war. Despite all his efforts, events take a tragic turn. This play resonated so much in its time that it was adapted into a film as early as 1937, directed by Hugo Haas, who also played the lead role in the film.
