Description

In 1774, Ignác Schiffner brutally beat his father to death near the statue of Saint Procopius in Dubá. After the crime, he was quickly apprehended, imprisoned, and sentenced to death by breaking on a short trial. The punishment was carried out at the execution site in Mladá Boleslav on a hill aptly named Na spravedlnosti (On Justice). He was the last person to be executed in our lands in this very cruel manner. This grim event recorded by Pastor Arnošt Glaser inspired one of the most significant Czech poets, Karel Hynek Mácha, to write the lyrical-epic composition Máj, which is considered the pinnacle of our Romanticism and one of the most beautiful poems ever. In 2008, it was also adapted into a film.
