Description
This classic two-part verse tragedy by the renowned playwright Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is considered one of the most significant works of German literature. Doctor Heinrich Faust makes a pact with the devil Mephistopheles, who promises to restore his youth. In exchange, Faust promises his soul if he is happy for even a moment in his new life. Mephistopheles fulfills his obligations and takes Faust on a journey around the world. He helps him establish a relationship with a young girl named Margarete, which does not end well: Margarete gives birth to an illegitimate child and, in despair, kills it. When she is imprisoned and awaiting execution, Faust persuades her to escape together... The story is inspired by legends about the real figure of Doctor Johann Georg Faust, a German alchemist, who was rumored to have made a pact with the devil even during his lifetime. This edition contains both parts of the tragedy.
