Description
Ben and Marion Rolfe are desperately trying to escape the necessity of spending a stifling summer in their cramped and noisy apartment in Queens. So when they get the chance to rent a mansion in upstate New York for the entire season for just $900, it's an offer they can't refuse. However, there is one catch: behind the strange and intricately carved doors in a remote wing of the house lives the elderly Mrs. Allardyce, and the Rolfes will be responsible for preparing her meals. It seems that Mrs. Allardyce never leaves her room, and soon it becomes clear that something strange and terrifying is happening in the house. As the tension rises and leads to the revelation of what truly lies behind the locked doors, the Rolfes discover that their cheap holiday rental comes at a terrible price... The Burning Ones (1973), which inspired the classic film adaptation from 1976 and had a recognized influence on Stephen King's The Shining, is one of the most original and chilling haunted house novels ever written.
