Description
Hazel Sinnett is a girl who desires studying surgery more than marriage. Unfortunately, it's the early nineteenth century, and medical education is not available to women. Jack Currer trades in bodies dug up from graves and struggles to survive in a city where life is not easy, especially with a disease ravaging the population, claiming the lives of most infected. When the two meet outside the headquarters of the Anatomical Society in Edinburgh, Hazel does not particularly impress the young man. However, when she is expelled from her studies with the renowned Dr. Beecham, she realizes that her new acquaintance might be more useful than she thought. Hazel has made an agreement with Dr. Beecham that if she can prepare for the medical exam on her own, the university will allow her and other women to study. But books alone are not enough; she needs bodies to dissect and study. Jack has his own problems. Strange men haunt body traders in the cemeteries, and his friends and acquaintances are disappearing without a trace. Eventually, he agrees to collaborate with Hazel, uncovering not only the secrets hidden in the graves but also in the heart of Edinburgh and its society...
